What is a Watershed?
From the core connection between water and land spring other highly complex relationships - animals and plants and their habitats, the habitats and the resident human beings, human beings and the environment, and human beings and their communities. The ecology of each watershed is dependent on these relationships, whether good or bad.
A watershed may be as small as a few acres draining into a farm pond, or as large as several thousand square miles for a major river system, such as that of the Meramec River or the even more vast Mississippi River Watershed. Kiefer Creek drains into the Meramec River, and therefore all of the land in the Kiefer Creek Watershed is also part of the Meramec River Watershed, which is in turn part of the Mississippi River Basin.
